About the Workshop

Tao Te Ching no 66
All streams f low to the sea
Because it is lower than they are.
Humility gives it its power.
If you want to govern the people.
You must place yourself below them.
If you want to lead the people.
You must learn how to follow them.

The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of the millions who look on and do nothing.

John Updike, The Coup.

My world turns and goes back to the place Where, a thousand forgotten years ago, The bird and the blowing wind Were like me, and were my brothers…” Oystein Dahle Ancien

Fernando Pessoa in Uncollected Poems 17-IX-1914
To clean and tidy up Matter…
To put back all the things people cluttered up
Because they didn’t understand what they were for…

To straighten, like a diligent housekeeper of reality, the curtains on the windows of Feeling and the mats before the doors of Perception…

To sweep the rooms of observation
And to dust off simple ideas…
That’s my life, verse by verse.

From a factless Autobiography 239 The Book of Disquiet “We weary of everything, except understanding.” The meaning of the phrase is sometimes hard to grasp. We weary of thinking to arrive at a conclusion, because the more we think and analyze and discern, the less we arrive at a conclusion. And so we fall into that passive state in which we want to understand only the explanation of whatever is being proposed. It’s an aesthetic attitude…

Fernando Pessoa, Book of Disquiet 232

Happy the man who doesn’t ask for more than what life spontaneously gives him, being guided by the instinct of cats, which seek sunlight when there’s sun, and then there’s no sun then heat, wherever they find it. Happy the man who renounces his personality in favor of the imagination and who delights in contemplating other people’s lives, experiencing not all impressions but the outward spectacle of all impressions. And happy, finally, the man who renounces everything, who has nothing that can be taken from him, nothing that can be diminished…..

Nothing satisfies me, nothing consoles me; everything that has been and that hasn’t been jades me. I don’t want to have my soul and don’t want to renounce it. I want what I don’t want and renounce what I don’t have. I can’t be nothing nor be everything: I’m the bridge between what I don’t have and what I don’t want.

“To be great, be whole, exclude nothing, exaggerate nothing that is you. Be whole in everything. Put all you are into the smallest thing you do. The whole moon gleams in every pool, It rides so high.” Fernando Pessoa, To be Great, be Whole.

What’s a man who isn’t mad
But someone ruddy beast,
A corpse postponed that breeds?

Fernando Pessoa, King Sebastian Message.

Extract from “Energy, Environment and Development” published by Chaired Professor José J. Delgado Domingos, IST, Lisbon
“Sustainable development has to be looked from a global and integrated perspective or it will be doomed to fall into the contradictions among the excessive specializations. The conceptual structure that thermodynamics grants when applied to Earth as a thermodynamic system, to the living being as a conserver of energy and to the social and economic activities are a domain that can also be examined in terms of energy and information fluxes, where the fundamental physical principles are valid and applicable, open up a whole new world of possibilities. Portuguese scientific and engineering community has underestimated this concept of an integrated vision which, in fact, is the source for leadership and progress, finding justifications that discard too easily the specific aspirations that others may have envisioned.”

“If a company that overspends its capital goes bankrupt, what will the consequences be for a society that over dilapidates its natural resources? Economic growth has been synonym of accumulation of capital gathered by man, suggesting the idea that this capital will substitute for the natural capital, which are the Natural Resources; This, however, cannot happen!”

“What we are talking about is the integration – of what science in its time was unaware – and of what, today’s science, is aware. Although, politicians and economists seem to want to discard in their continued ignorance of these facts.”

“The conceptual structure that thermodynamics grants when applied to Earth…opens up a whole new world of possibilities.” José J. Delgado Domingos, IST Lisbon.
